The designers wanted to build on – the surprise, the idea of the unexpected, the twist. For the Coach flagship store in Omotesando, Tokyo, OMA designed a façade of interlocking acrylic display units with a logic that translates to the interior. The units frame individual items like bags, busts or mannequins, making each appear precious. The façade design continues from floor to ceiling over both levels of the store, presenting the entire corner of the building it occupies with the same treatment. The translucency of the acrylic panels gives a glowing effect at night. Inside the store, OMA designed a central core of acrylic blocks that complements the façade. The volume of the space is brilliantly and innovatively characterized with touches of humor here and there and is in perfect harmony with the key brand values of Longchamp: chic, creativity, pleasure, appealingly fresh.
