WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

Uniqlo stepped up its game with a new collection based on modern art and a redesigned second floor in the Manhattan Fifth Avenue flagship store.

SPRZ NY (Surprise New York) debuted at the retailer's Fifth Ave. store as part of a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art. The merchandise collection features 200 t-shirts, polo shirts, light jackets bandanas and tote bags inspired by iconic artists Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Jackson Pollock, as well newer artists such as Ryan McGinness and Sarah Morris.

The items feature graffiti, graphic design and street photography. Those contemporary-art themes that have been part of New York City’s cultural DNA and demonstrates Uniqlo’s “global meets local” ethos. The items are showcased in museum-like display cases at the New York store but are available to a global customer base via its online store. The collection will change and be updated with pieces inspired by more artists.

In addition to the new MoMA collection, Uniqlo has also installed a Starbucks on the second floor of the Fifth Avenue location. The renovated floor now features sofas, tables and chairs, and an iPad station, transforming retail into a hybrid museum-coffeehouse hangout. The idea is that the longer customers stay inside the store, the more they will buy.
